A steering characteristic variable (depending on motor speed)
The construction and operation of the steering mechanism basically taken from the model 626 (GF), with the following exceptions. On cars the Mazda 3 used telescopic mechanism with variable characteristics.

Scheme of steering with variable characteristics: 1 - the steering wheel; 2 - the steering shaft; 3 - an intermediate shaft; 4 - steering; 5 --section AA; 6 - from the steering mechanism; 7 - on the part of the steering wheel; 8 - U-shaped plate; 9 - inner shaft; 10 - external speaker; 11 - an arm; 12 - normal position; 13 - in a collision

The steering mechanism is coupled to the steering shaft via an intermediate shaft (Fig. 5.2). During collision countershaft destroyed when moving the steering back, thus achieving reduction of the impact energy. In the event of impact of the driver against the steering wheel, the impact force is transmitted from the steering wheel to the inner shaft, the outer column and the mounting bracket. This bracket is separated from the instrument panel and the entire steering shaft moves forward. Thereafter, the U-shaped plate fixed to the instrument panel with one hand and hold the mounting bracket on the other deforms and absorbs the impact energy.
