Identification
The engine number and the lettering stamped on the engine block above the oil filter:
- 5-cylinder gasoline engine - the cylinder block between 2 and 3 cylinders; - 4-cylinder diesel engine - on the engine block between the high pressure fuel pump (pump) and a vacuum pump; - 5-cylinder diesel engine - the cylinder block near the high pressure fuel pump (pump). Engine code embossed on top of the intake manifold.
A warning Some engines additional sticker with the number and letter designations engine is on the fence on top of the timing belt.
Chassis number applied externally to the right under the windshield.
Deciphering the chassis number

1. Designation of the world manufacturer: WV2 = VWAG. 2. The additional symbol (except models for the USA). 3. The 2-digit abbreviation for the type of the first two digits of the official type designation: 70 = VWT4. 4. Additional designation. 5. Note the year of construction of model: M = 1991, N = 1992, etc. 6. Places of production within the group VW: H - Hannover, W - Wolfsburg, E - Emden, A - Ingolstadt, N - Nekarzulm K - Osnabruck, B - Brussels. 7. The current numbering: the countdown begins with 000001 with model year.
