Repair of an automatic transmission

Due to the complexity of the design of an automatic transmission control system and its medium and major repairs must be carried out at a service station or in workshops specializing in the repair of automatic transmissions. In addition, for maintenance work must be a large number of special tools and equipment necessary for troubleshooting and repair. Therefore, the information in this chapter is limited to the description for removing and installing the gearbox assembly, as well as the removal, installation and adjustment of a cable of the selector.

Removing automatic gearbox
Removing automatic gearbox in the following order:
- Install and secure the car on the overpass, ramp, lift or pit, or expose the car on the driver's seat, if the work is carried out on the court with a firm, level surface. It should have sufficient space for access to the car from all sides. Apply the parking brake;
- Turn off the engine and remove the ignition key;
- Disconnect the "-" battery terminal;
- To improve access to the engine, it is desirable to remove the "front of the engine compartment" is an assembly that includes a front bumper, radiator grille, the fan (s) cooling system, headlights, front side wall and the mechanism of the bonnet;
- Move selector lever to position "P";
- Loosen the nut of the cable clamp to the bracket selector and disconnect the cable from the selector lever bracket;
- Inside the passenger compartment, remove the screws that secure the cover to the console selector lever, lift up the cover and turn aside;

Detach the cable from the selector switching mechanism. The location of the locking ring indicated by the arrow
Fig. 5.124. Detach the cable from the selector switching mechanism. The location of the locking ring indicated by the arrow

- Remove the selector lever lock ring (Fig. 5.124) and disconnect the cable from the switch mechanism;
- Remove the cable from the selector lever housing, disconnect it from all the fixings and remove from the vehicle;
- Remove the bolt and remove the tire of grounding from a transmission;

Installation locations clamps on coolant hoses transmission fluid exchanger (indicated by arrows)

- Using suitable clamps pinch the inlet and outlet of the heat exchanger coolant hoses transmission fluid (Fig. 5.125), release the clamps and disconnect the hose ends from the radiator. Rags remove all vylivshuyusya coolant;

Multi-pin connectors that need to disconnect (indicated by arrows)

- Mark and disconnect the electrical connectors (Fig. 5.126) from the gearbox;
- Remove the bolt and undertray transmission;
- Disconnect the electrical wires and remove the starter;
- Set the garage jack under the gearbox and prop it;
- Remove the bolt and bracket rear left engine mounting with the gearbox and engine mounts;
- Unscrew the screws and remove the torque converter;
- Unscrew the screws and remove the drive shaft from the transmission output shafts and tie a piece of wire as possible, the right drive shaft;

Bolts to the lower control arm ball joint (indicated by arrows)
Fig. 5.127. Bolts to the lower control arm ball joint (indicated by arrows)

- Disconnect the lower left control arm from the lower ball joint (Fig. 5.127);
- Left drive shaft on the transfer arm of the lift and slide the free end of the back and to the side of the gearbox;
- Turn the steering wheel fully to the left;
- Through the hole to install, remove the starter turns each bolt torque converter to the drive disk. To do this, turn the crank shaft with a wrench and the end of the bolt head pulley, until Remove all bolts;
- Remove the screws and remove from the vehicle front crossbeam engine mounts;
- Lift the engine slightly higher. With this gearbox few drops and it can be easily removed;
- Starting from the bottom, remove all bolts securing the gearbox to the engine, in addition to the top;
- Before separating transmission from the engine, be sure to disconnect all that is required;
- Turn the last bolt on top of the housing and separate the transmission from the engine;
- To the torque converter has not dropped out of the gearbox, tie him across to the transmission beams;
- After all the vacant dowel pins, lower the gearbox from the engine compartment with a jack.

Installing automatic gearbox
Installing automatic gearbox is made in sequence, return to removal, taking into account the following recommendations:
- Set the torque converter, making sure that the leading fingers in the center of the torque converter hub located in the recesses provided for them in the inner wheel of the hydraulic pump, and tighten the screws on the drive disk 60 N ? m;
- Bolts of a transmission to the engine tighten to 80 Nm (M12 screws) or 60 Nm (M10 screws);
- After setting the front engine mount beams, tighten the bolts to 60 Nm, which they take over the weight of the engine;
- Set the bracket on the left-hand engine mount and tighten the bolts to 60 Nm;
- Set the bracket on the left side of the gearbox and tighten bolts to 25 Nm;
- Attach the cover of the mounting box to the torque converter gearbox housing and tighten the bolts to 15 Nm;
- Tighten the lower control arm ball joint to the torque;
- Tighten the drive shaft from the inside torque 45 Nm;
- Set the selector lever cable in the reverse order of removal. To attach a cable to the selector lever using a new lock ring;
- Move selector lever to position "P";
- On the gearbox, release the clamp bolt rope from the lever shaft selector, turn the selector shaft up to the stop in the position corresponding to position "P", and tighten the clamp bolt;
- Check the operation of the selector lever, switching it in all positions. Selecting each mode must take place smoothly and without delay.

Filling automatic gearbox transmission fluid
Filling gearbox transmission fluid as follows:
- Using a funnel and a hose length of approximately 0.50 m, fill the gearbox 3 liters of transmission fluid ATF. Start the engine and switch the selector lever to all positions that are filled with transmission fluid channels. After that, return the selector lever to position "P";
- Apply the parking brake and allow the engine to idle for a while;

A WARNING
In no case do not overfill the gearbox, as failures may appear in her work.

- Using the dipstick, check the transmission fluid level. If the transmission fluid level exceeds the mark "MAX", it is necessary to pump the liquid.

Filling differential oil (or transmission fluid)
Differential automatic transmission AG4 filled hypoid type G50 oil or synthetic oil SAE 75W90, and the differential automatic transmission type 01M - transmission fluid ATF VW.

Determining the level of oil in the differential
Fig. 5.128. Determining the level of oil in the differential

The oil level in the differential should be checked every 10 000 km of run of the car. To measure the oil level in the differential, remove the drive shaft of a speedometer. In the lower portion of the drive shaft of a speedometer, on its neck, is marked ?Max? and ?Min? (Fig. 5.128), which is determined by the oil level.
To determine the level of oil in the differential, proceed as follows:
- Remove the drive shaft of a speedometer;
- A clean cloth, wipe it clean, and again set the differential;
- Again, remove the drive shaft and the oil level in the vote differential. It should be between the marks ?Max? and ?Min?;
- If the oil level is below the mark ?Min?, then add it to the differential case to a normal level.
The total amount of oil poured into the differential case is 0.75 l to the case drain.

Troubleshooting automatic transmission
Troubleshooting automatic transmission, their causes and remedies are presented in the Table. 5:20.

NOTE
Because of the complexity of the automatic gearbox motorist would be difficult to correctly identify the causes of faults and perform maintenance. In the event of any fault, except for the above, the car should be referred to an experienced mechanic for repairs. Do not rush to remove the gearbox, as the majority of inspections carried out without removing the unit from the car.
