Check the voltage drop at the output of the generator
This test by measuring the voltage drop determines the state of the wire between terminal "B" of the generator and the positive terminal of the battery, including the fuse-link.
Preparation Turn the ignition switch to ?OFF?.
A WARNING To determine the reliability of the connection, make sure that you have not touched one of the two terminals or connections during the test. |
Connect a DVM between terminal "B" of the generator and the positive terminal of the battery. Connect the positive probe of the voltmeter to the "B" of the generator and the negative lead of the voltmeter - to the positive terminal of the battery.
Test conditions With the engine running and the included headlights, heater blower and other consumers remove the voltmeter.
Result The voltmeter should read voltage of 0.2 V. If greater than 0.2 V may damage or loose wire is connected to the terminals. In this case, check the wire from the output "B" of the generator through the fusible link to the positive terminal of the battery. Check the connection wires or color change when it is overheated. Reconnect the wires and then check the voltage drop. After completion of the test run the engine at idle, turn off the headlights, heater fan, other consumers and, in the last instance, the ignition.
