Rack and pinion steering
Refitting Fastening of a steering without the hydraulic booster The illustration above shows how the mechanical steering system installed in the vehicle. Removal and installation are carried out on the basis of this illustration: | - Lift the front of the car and establish on supports.
- Remove the cotter pins from the castellated nuts tips of steering drafts, loosen the nut and disconnect the ball joints pliers, as shown in the The illustration shows a special stripper, but for this job fits any puller for ball fingers.
- Loosen the four screws on the steering mechanism.
- Remove the bottom hinge of the steering gear.
- Completely remove the screws, remove the steering gear steering with steering rods sideways. Installation is performed in reverse sequence, with the following elements:
- Tighten the bolts to the steering torque 73 - 97 N ??? m.
- Align flattening pinion steering with a threaded hole of the flange, as shown in the illustration and gently hammer the clamping bolt. Then tighten the nut with a force of 25 to 29 N ??? m.
| Flattening (1) must be in line with the clamping shaft splines Steering (2). |
- When tightening the screws tips of steering drafts tighten them with a force of 30 - 40 N ??? m, ignoring the position of the pin hole. Now check the position of the hole and tighten the nut further to be able to insert the pin. Tightening torque must not exceed 50 N ??? m.
| A tightening castellated nuts tips of steering drafts. If the hole for the pin (1) is not on the line, tighten the nut, as shown at right. |
- Make sure the steering wheel spokes are in the correct position when the wheels are in the middle position. Maybe that pinion steering wrapped one turn on.

Steering Repairs Dismantling the steering mechanism it is not recommended since in most cases, should be replaced by a rack and / or the housing of the rack if there is an assumption that the steering mechanism is broken. Since both items are essential elements of the steering mechanism, it is better install the new steering. Replace the tie rods can be both. To do this, remove the steering gear. The illustration below shows the details related to this. Details tie rod on one side | 1 - Tie Rod 2 - clamp the cuff 3 - Cuff 4 - pin 5 - castellated nut 6 - clamp 7 - lock nut 8 - the tie rod end |
| - Thoroughly clean the outside of the steering mechanism and hold the steering mechanism in a vice.
- Loosen the lock nuts on both track rod and unscrew the tie rods.
- Pull the cuff after loosening the clamp fastening.
- Beat lock plate to the toothed rack via a brass chisel as shown.
| Bending lock plate from the tie rod on the mounting rack. |
- Hold the rack on the inner side of the wrench, unscrew the tie rods. Remove the tie rods and remove the washers. Lock washers should always be replaced.
- Clean all parts and replace worn parts.
- The assembly is performed in reverse order, but keep in mind the following points and adjustments:
- Place the rack on the retaining plate and screw in the tie rods. Tighten the tie rod holding rack, with a force of 78 - 98 N ??? m. Fold the tab of the locking plate on the two surfaces of the hinge of steering drafts.
- Screw the tie rods and temporarily tighten the locknut. The main steering rod length is 183.6 mm as measured between the outer surface of the lock nut and the beginning of the cuff. Set the length of this.
- Place the cuff and place the inner ends of the cuffs back on the rack housing.
- After installing the steering mechanism should be adjusted toe to expose the proper length of steering drafts, and adjust the center position of the steering controls.
