Check the hydraulic tappets

Some noises emitted by the engine may be the result of failure of hydraulic valve lifters. Following the procedure described below, the engine can not start at least thirty minutes and preferably not to about 10 hours, as otherwise the piston may come to rest in the valves. The procedure for replacing the hydraulic tappets is described as part of the disassembly / repair the cylinder head. Checking the hydraulic pushers carried out as follows:
- Warm up the engine to operating temperature, turn it off and remove the camshaft (the procedure is described as part of the removal / installation of the cylinder head);
- Turning the crankshaft using face head, set in a vertical position the first cam of the first cylinder of a camshaft;

Adjusting the gap between the base and the cam follower
Fig. 2.1. Adjusting the gap between the base and the cam follower

- Determine the gap using feeler gauge between the base and the cam follower. If it exceeds 0.1 mm, the plunger is defective and should be replaced. Next, using a wooden or plastic tool Depress the plunger until it touches the end of the valve (Fig. 2.1) and measure the clearance again. If the newly formed gap of more than 0.2 mm, the plunger is also considered faulty.
