Check compression (diesel engine 5,0L)

NOTE
In this type of engine compression test the vehicle is stationary involves time consuming operations. Therefore, it is advisable to hold the data of test idle setting. Measurement of compression is only advisable if there is a suspicion of failure of the cylinder / cylinders.

NOTE
Special tools and workshop equipment, as well as aids:
- Torque wrench (5-50 Nm) VAG 1331;
- Adapter VAG 1381/12;
- Compression VAG 1763;
- Cover plate T10247 (vehicles with letter designations Engine AYH, BKW);
- Connection hose VAS 6278 (vehicles with letter designations Engine AYH, BKW).

Test conditions
Engine oil temperature min. 30 ? C.
Ignition off.

Checking procedure
Drain the coolant.
On vehicles with letter designations Engine AYH, BKW remove the fuel filter.

Closing the connection fitting fuel hoses with a protective plate T10247
Fig. 2.15. Closing the connection fitting fuel hoses with a protective plate T10247

Close coupling of fuel hose with a protective plate T10247 (Fig. 2.15).

Connecting the fuel
Fig. 2.16. Connecting the fuel

Connect the fuel hose A Connection to the fuel line VAS 6278 B (Fig. 2.16).
On cars with engines of BLE and BWF Remove bypass the radiator cap with a recirculation system.

Continuation of the assembly operations for all vehicles
Remove the top cover of the oil filter housing.
Remove the spark plugs.

Removing the cover plenum chamber
Fig. 2.17. Removing the cover plenum chamber

Remove the right cover plenum chamber D (Fig. 2.17).
Disconnect the small connector from the engine control unit.

NOTE
With the shutdown of small plug-in connection is achieved by the condition in which, despite operating the starter, the engine will not start. When starting the engine in the fault memory errors occur. After work on the measurement of compression is necessary to consider and remove the error.

After measuring the compression fault memory.
Screw adapter VAG 1381/12 socket glow plugs checked the cylinder.
Place the upper part of the cover of the oil filter housing.

Measurement of compression
Fig. 2.18. Measurement of compression

Measure compression using an instrument for measuring compression VAG 1763 (Fig. 2.18).
Turn the starter until compression tester readings will cease to increase.

Indications of compression
New: 25 ? 0,31 bar gauge.
The maximum tolerance of 19 barg.
Permissible differences between the individual cylinders: 5 bar.
Install the glow plug. Fill in cooling liquid. After checking all the cylinders of the engine and the full staffing granted, fault memory and delete the error.
