Check the radiator

The cooling system is pressurized. The radiator cap or the expansion tank is provided a spring to ensure integrity of the system and opens it when the pressure increases to a certain level (indicated on the cover of the corresponding value). Increased pressure due to expansion of the coolant increases the boiling point.

Pressure testing the cooling system and the expansion tank cap
Fig. 136. The pressurization of the cooling system and the expansion tank cap

To check the plug uses a special pump. On a screwed plug (Fig. 136, below), then to pump until pressure valve opens. The pressure at which the valve opens is 1.4-1.5 bar if the plug is still new. Second-hand tube shall withstand a pressure of 1.3 to 1.4 bar. Otherwise, the plug must be replaced.
Using the same pump can check the tightness of the cooling system. It is screwed onto the filler neck of a special adapter (see. Fig. 136). After that it is necessary to create a pressure of 1 bar, checking that the pressure gauge must be held for at least 5 minutes. If this does not occur in the cooling system has a leak, which is easier to detect when the system is pressurized.
