Getting Traffic and shift

In the driver's pit footswitch should not be any objects that can restrict the freedom of movement of the pedals! When using non-standard rugs or mats need to ensure adequate progress of the pedals.

The total load on the engine should be given only after the pre-heating it up to normal operating temperature, which occurs during movement fast enough.

When starting off on slippery surfaces avoid prolonged any rotation of the wheels, as this may damage the power unit.

Models with the 6-speed Manual transmission

Scheme shift applied to the end face gear shift.

Driving the shift to the model of ML 270 CDI (for reverse gear lever must first pull the lever up)

Switching gears while driving is performed in accordance with the technical specifications of the transmission - try to avoid excessive speeds. In the Specifications to this chapter presents data on high-speed gearshift.

Reverse gear must be done only after a full stop of the car - before turning the lever handle, pull up.

When driving on a slippery road surface to avoid transmission of braking, as this may lead to loss of traction! Remember that the engine brake is always associated with a sharp increase in its turns, is fraught with serious internal injuries of the power unit.

Models with a 5-speed AT

Switching gears while driving is performed automatically depending on the position of the selector lever AT position switch programs, the degree of squeezing gas pedal and the current speed.

Switching automatic transmission automatically adapt to individual driving style, due to gear shift points. The adaptation process is continuously taking into account the current values of the operating parameters of the power unit, the characteristics of movement, as well as action by the driver. The change in the characteristics of the AT movement responds to adapt the program shift.

Before driving, depress the brake pedal to unlock the selector lever AT, then release the parking brake and set the gear lever into one of the provisions of the movement (see. Below). Wait until the gear engaged (especially when the engine is cold), then release the brake pedal and depress the accelerator pedal.

Remember that before the final warm-up engine gear shift is made with a slightly higher speed, which ensures rapid heating of the catalytic converter up to its normal operating temperature.

When traveling, keep in mind that simply tap on the gas pedal provides earlier switching the transmission to a higher gear, while under strong pressure switch occur later.

Squeezing the throttle pedal to the floor (to the point of overcoming resistance) automatically switches to a lower gear AT mode (kickdown), providing enhanced dynamic qualities of the car. Releasing the pedal returns the transmission to a higher gear that meets the characteristics of this high-speed mode.

When a temporary halt not output from the selector lever to position ?D?, and with the help of the foot or handbrake insure a car from translational motion due to the terrain.

When maneuvering in tight spaces, adjust the speed of the gradual releasing the foot brake. Try lightly squeeze the gas pedal and do not "play" with it.

When towing a trailer in hilly terrain select mode restrictions AT (2 or 3, depending on the steepness of the slopes) for particularly dangerous sections include off-road mode LOW RANGE.

AT selector lever with an electronic selector module equipped with sequential shift function range switch to ?D?, - models of release since 1.9.99

When driving on a slippery road surface should not produce inhibition of transmission by moving the selector lever with limited range "3", "2" or "1", as this may lead to loss of traction! Remember that the engine brake is always associated with a sharp increase in its turns, is fraught with serious internal injuries of the power unit.

Information about the selected selector lever position is displayed in the display field on the face of the tachometer to the left of the clock display.

Information about the selected position of the selector lever (in this case - ?D?) is displayed in the display field on the dial of a tachometer on the left of the clock display

The transmission range selector lever can be in one of eight fixed positions). Starting is only possible in the positions ?P? or ?N? of the lever. If the stop is made when the AT is in a range of movement "D", "4", "3", "2", "1", "R" or mode "N", it is necessary to fully release the accelerator pedal and squeeze the brake pedal for reliable braking of the car.

Provisions range selector lever AT (models of release since 1.9.99)

When switching to the AT arm move along the guide groove. When removing the key from the ignition switch the selector lever locked in position "P". In this case, the output of the lever from the "P" is not possible even when squeezing the brake pedal. To avoid breakage AT translate the lever in position "P" only after the vehicle is stopped.

Removing the key from the ignition becomes possible only after the transfer of the selector lever to position "P" and the foot brake pedal is released.

The standard range

The position "P". In this position, the selector lever is blocked transmission that provides additional protection of the car parked. Always translate the selector lever to position "P" when you turn off or the engine is started. To display range selector lever from position "P", it is necessary to squeeze the brake pedal, pre-releasing the gas pedal. Reject the selector lever to the right and remove it from position "P".

The position ?R?. Methods of control range selector lever when transferring it from the position "P" position ?R? (Reverse) as described above. Turning the lever to position ?R? of the position ?N? (neutral) is made only after a full stop of the car. If the reverse is not included when the vehicle is stationary, depress the foot brake pedal and slowly move the selector lever in the first position ?N?, then to ?R?.

The position ?N?. Use the position ?N? (Neutral) when starting the engine stalled on the go and at short stops the car with the engine running. If you for some reason need to move away from the vehicle, pre-set the range selector lever to position "P". In the derivation of the lever out of position ?N? foot brake pedal is depressed.

Translation transmission in position ?N? of the movement associated with the risk of serious internal damage to the gearbox! Use this position only when the threat of drift of the car when driving on a slippery road surface.

Position ?D?. In this position the range selector lever must be constantly at car movement in normal driving conditions, - it provides automatic switching between AT five forward gears in accordance with changes in speed limits and the degree of squeezing gas pedal. For sharp dispersal of the car when the transmission in the range of ?D?, ?4" or "3" squeeze the pedal to the metal. This transmission will automatically switch to an adjacent lower transmission mode (kickdown). If the vehicle speed is low, switching may occur by two notches down.

On models of release on 08.31.99 position limit switch ranges (4, 3, 2 and 1) are also among the standard.

The ranges for the movement under special conditions

When the position "D" transmission is possible to switch it into ranges of movement in particular conditions ("4", "3", "2" and "1").

Easy push-lever to the left (?D-?) leads to a transition to an adjacent down-AT range. If you hold the lever in position ?D-? switches the transmission into the range that provides optimum dynamic performance of the car in accordance with the current active transmission. Information on changes in the ranges displayed in the display field on the face of the tachometer to the left of the clock display.

When push-ups lever to ?D-? while driving with an excessively high speed switching mode of transmission is blocked in order to prevent an unacceptable increase in engine speed.

Squeezing the lever to position ?D +? leads to a shift in the transmission adjacent to the current higher range. Holding the lever in position ?D +? allows a return to the standard mode ?D?.

Position "4". If the range selector lever is switched to "4", automatic transmission functions similarly to the case enable the range of ?D?. The difference is that the shift is eliminated the fifth speed gear.

The position "3". In this position, move shift transmission limited to third gear. The mode can be used for engine braking. Comprising a range of "3" is also useful to eliminate unnecessary cycle through the automatic transmission between the third and fourth gears - like cyclic shift gearbox can be observed, for example, when driving in heavy traffic with frequent stops and slowdowns.

Position "2". When the range of "2" automatic transmission will constantly work on the second transfer. We recommend using this limit when towing a trailer in hilly terrain or for engine braking on downhill slope significantly. When you stop the car the gearbox does not go into first gear. The constant switch second gear provides good traction dynamics of the car on the climbs and the possibility of intensive engine braking on steep descents. The range of "2" can also be used when starting off on a slippery road surface or when driving in deep snow, helping to prevent severe slippage of the drive wheels of the vehicle. It is recommended to use a range of "2" when driving on steep mountain passes, driving with a trailer in hilly terrain, as well as for engine braking on steep descents especially.

"1". When the range of "1" automatic transmission will constantly work on the first transfer. If the inclusion of a range of "1" is produced at a speed of over 50 km / h, the first mission will switch to second gear. Turning the intermediate stage eliminates the sharp and unexpected engine braking. The mode can be used when driving with a trailer on particularly steep descents and long passes.

Emergency mode

On the transition of transmission in emergency mode operation indicate deterioration of the dynamic characteristics and transmission failure by switching. There is a possibility to switch to 2nd gear or reverse gear.

In such a situation, you should stop moving, park in a safe location, move the selector lever to position "P" and turn off the engine.

Wait at least 10 seconds, re-start the engine and move the selector lever in position ?D? - turn 2nd gear. Translation of the lever to position ?R? leads to a reverse gear.

The car should immediately drive off to the nearest service station Mercedes-Benz for detailed diagnosis of AT and perform necessary regenerative repair.
