Checking the charge

PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. Remember that the failure of the generator is not the only possible cause of infringement of serviceability of functioning of the system charge. If any signs of system failure, check the following:

    a) Check the condition and the tension of the drive belt of the generator, in case of need make its replacement (see chap. Engine);
    b) Check the reliability of a tightening of bolts of fastening of the generator
    c) Check the condition of the generator and its wiring terminal connections, if necessary remove the oxidation products, tighten the fasteners;
    d) Check the state of the corresponding fuse, located in the main assembly block (see chap. Onboard electric) - before replacing the fuse punched eliminate the cause of the overload;
    e) Start the engine and make sure that the generator does not produce any unusual noises - whistling or squealing may indicate deterioration of the bearings or brushes;
    f) Check the completeness of the charge level of the battery - remember that damage to one of the jars may lead to increased current consumption;
    g) Disconnect from the battery both wires (at first negative), and carefully examine the condition of the pole terminals - in the case of corrosion carefully smooth out terminals, preferably with the use of special tools, track reliability of fixing of tips of wires on the terminals.
  2. Check the output voltage of the battery when the engine is switched off - the result of the measurement should be around 12 V.
  3. Do not disconnect the ventilator from the battery, start the engine and begin to raise its turnover until the readings have stabilized (approximately 3000 rev / min). The result of measurement should not go beyond the range of 13.5 ÷ 14.6 V - generator during travel required to provide battery charging.
  4. Turn on as many power consumers (external lighting devices, the heater fan, heated rear window, etc.) and make sure that the voltmeter readings were within the range of 13 ÷ 14 - the voltage may temporarily fall, but should reopen normal (you may have to slightly increase the engine speed).
  5. When the output voltage exceeds the upper boundary of the acceptable range necessary to replace the voltage regulator.
  6. The cause of excessive under-voltage may be worn brushes of the generator, the weakening of the brush springs, regulator failure, the failure of the diode, winding breakage and damage to the collector rings. Status of brushes and collector rings can be checked visually - with no obvious damage to the generator should be removed from the vehicle for more checks and regenerative repair / replacement.
